![]() What made this year even more special for me is that my 7 year old son asked if he could join me and spend the day with me so that I wouldn’t be alone, for the record my 7 year old is the coolest kid on the planet. This year my birthday entertainment was provided by Brantley Gilbert, Lynyrd Skynyrd and the John Butler Trio just to name 3 of the 15 acts that took to the stage that day. One of my favourite parts of Ottawa Bluesfest is that usually one of the days falls on or just before my Birthday so I always get to celebrate with 20K, or so, of my closest friends (aka all of you guys) and some of the best music on the planet. July 14, 2015įor me the second week kicked off on my 41st Birthday, July 14. Initial plans were that I would be finished my shifts with the Green Team by this point as well but health issues in the first week forced me to pick up some shifts in the second week. The song won’t knock your socks off, but I give kudos to Scott for maturing beyond hot girls and horrible pick up lines. After an incredible start to this year’s Ottawa Bluesfest the second week was the week that had more of the music I was interested loaded so it was no doubt one I would be looking forward to covering. Overall, this song is light years ahead of anything else in Scott’s career and proves he actually CAN make some quality country music. I will say there’s at least an attempt at an emotional delivery, so while it’s not the best, I appreciate the effort. They’re not horrible, but I just don’t feel like his vocals were the perfect fit for this song. If there is one issue I take with this song, it’s Scott’s vocals. The writers knew what they were going for with this, and the production is all the better for it. ![]() There isn’t any attempt at some loud guitar solo, or insertion of some annoying drum machine. The sound is also a nice feature of this song, as it is decidedly stripped back and (gasp!) country sounding. It’s not the best written thing out there, but it’s an improvement. The lyrics are tender and heartfelt, and I’ll give credit to Scott where it’s due. Lyrically, it’s miles better than any of his past material (which isn’t saying much). The male assures her that there is no reason to fear though, as he will stay by her side no matter what, and thinks she’s crazy for insinuating otherwise ( You can be as crazy as you want, as long as you’re crazy over me). She seems to be a little anxious over every detail in the relationship, such as when a pretty girl walks by the two of them, or if she looks fat in a particular shirt, or if she’s smart enough for the guy. The song features a man and a woman who are crazy over each other. So that’s why his newest single, “Crazy Over Me” surprises me, as it is the first single of his career that actually showcases some emotion and authenticity. Songs like “Mmm Mmm Mmm” or “Lay It On Me” were cringe inducing for sure to say the least, but thankfully neither made an impact on the charts. Now, I don’t mean any personal disrespect by comparing the guy to an insect, but that’s how I perceive his career. ![]() When it comes to the young career of Dylan Scott, the only way I can describe how I feel towards him is by comparing him to a fly. I collectively found most mainstream singles disappointing and boring this year this was just bad. Moreover, “I Love My Country” is another shot for them to denounce their critics through their feigned “authenticity,” and speaking as one, I just didn’t care. “Cruise” forever defines their legacy, and, as far as the music goes, proves that they haven’t able to be much more than frat-bros partying it up with not a care in the world, at least, you know, in song. Another way of saying that, to me, nothing this year quite spoke to that disconnect than Florida Georgia Line’s “I Love My Country.” Most people noticed it ripped off Kane Brown’s “Short Skirt Weather” my mind immediately thought of Chris Young’s “Raised on Country.” Either way, you’ve heard this song from this duo before, a tepid attempt at recapturing any former glory they once had. But there were way better options than this, from singles that didn’t become chart hits to quite a bit of music found beyond one’s radio dial. Look, I don’t begrudge anyone who needed more than a bit of escapism this year. It’s a genre that prides itself on speaking to real life problems, but this year, all country radio had to offer was either boring-as-fuck boyfriend country, which we’ve discussed here already, or bro-country revivals aimed at taking attention away from the global pandemic. I’ll be blunt, if my blurbs for these scream as half-assed, it’s because I just did not have the energy for most mainstream country singles this year – the ones that were hits, at least. Florida Georgia Line, "I Love My Country"
